3 Things to Consider When Choosing a Clip For Your Horse

We cannot believe that Autumn is just round the corner – how crazy is that? The summer has flown by; make sure you share your sharer summer stories with us using #sharemypony.

Now that the seasons are changing, so does our routine with looking after our share horses. Pack away the fly spray and bring out the clippers! Undoubtedly this will be the first of many clips you do over the autumn/winter months, but how do you pick which clip is right for you?!

First of all, how much work is your horse in? If you ride your horse once a week, then maybe an irish clip for you. It’s enough to keep them cool without them getting chilly overnight, or having to rug excessively.

If you ride your horse two to three times a week, the a trace clip or blanket clip is more suitable. Your horse will be sweating a lot more and you don’t want them to overheat or catch a chill.

Of course there is no ‘one size fits all’ for clipping, you have to take into account the natural temperature of a horse (they are like human, some are boiling hot ALL of the time and others are super chilly), whether they have any conditions such as EMS or Cushings.

If your horse is in heavy work, then a full clip, or hunter clip may be necessary!

It’s always sad to say goodbye to the summer, but we move into the season of cooler days, no flies and beautiful scenery.

Happy clipping!
